Five Songs That Changed My Life: Love Story

This post is part of Five Songs That Changed My Life, a personal series reflecting on the music that guided me back to playing, performing, and sharing songs with others. The songs in this series unfold in order, beginning with Lava and ending with Love Story

Recognizing Artistry, Integrity, and Ownership

Some songs change your life quietly, and others announce themselves the moment you realize they’re staying with you forever. Love Story by Taylor Swift falls into both categories for me. While the song itself is iconic, what truly changed my life was the artist behind it. Taylor Swift exists in her own category of singer-songwriters—one defined by storytelling, resilience, and a deep sense of integrity within an industry that doesn’t always reward those qualities.

I have immense respect for Taylor’s advocacy within show business, especially her decision to re-record and re-release her masters. That moment was when I truly began noticing her not just as a pop star, but as an artist who understands the value of ownership, voice, and long-term vision. Watching her stand up for her work reshaped how I think about creativity and control, and it added a whole new layer of meaning to her music for me.

Whenever I ask someone what their favorite Taylor Swift song is, the answer is almost always Love Story. It’s her most recognizable, most universally loved song, and there’s a reason it has endured for so long. There’s something timeless about its optimism and sincerity—it feels both nostalgic and alive at the same time.  Even now, when I sing Love Story, I sometimes get caught up by the simple fact that I’m playing it at all. It still feels surreal, like stepping into a song that has lived so many lives before finding its way into mine. As my fifth favorite song, it represents not just a melody I love, but a moment of recognizing the power of artistry, ownership, and believing in your own story enough to tell it your way.
